The Artist

Joanna Angie is a painter, muralist and community-engaged artist. She is the founder of The Buffalo Arts Studio and served as its Director from 1991 to 2012. Solo and group exhibitions of her work have been held at Anderson Gallery (Buffalo, NY), Buffalo Arts Studio (Buffalo, NY), CEPA Gallery (Buffalo, NY), El Museo (Buffalo, NY), Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center (Buffalo, NY), Himalayan Institute of Buffalo (Buffalo, NY), Insight Gallery (Buffalo, NY), Kenan Center (Lockport, NY), Olean Gallery (Olean, NY), Roz Steiner Gallery (Batavia, NY) and Scweinfurth Gallery (Auburn, NY).

As a community-engaged artist, Joanna has worked on numerous projects including the public art project to commemorate the Centennial of the Pan-American Exposition in 2001, and the community committee for the 2006 visit to Buffalo by His Holiness, the Dalai Lama.  In 2005, 2007 and 2010, she was an active participant in Beyond/In WNY Exhibitions, a collaboration between visual arts organizations in Western New York.  

Joanna’s mural commissions include work at Carnegie Hall Towers in New York City and at St. Paul’s Cathedral and The Buffalo Club in Buffalo. Faux finish and restoration commissions include William Hurt’s residence (NY), the Johnson estate (NY), and a Roosevelt residential library (NY). Joanna's restoration of the Tiffany murals at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Buffalo led to a national restoration award for the Church in 1993. 

Joanna Angie’s contributions to the arts and culture of New York State have been widely recognized. In 2001, she received the Arts Supporter Award from the Buffalo and Erie County Arts Council and in 2008, she was issued a formal commendation for her contribution to the arts by the New York State Senate.

Joanna is a graduate of Bennett College.
